On the second day of the tournament, Widefield High School was competing in two different areas for state.
For #2 Singles, Nic Just, he had to beat a rival from Colorado Springs Christian School (CSCS). They played once before at the Fountain Tournament with the CSCS young man coming out on top in a pro set. This time would prove to be different. Nobody has spent more time on the court working tirelessly to get better and improve upon his strokes, and it showed. Nic won the first set 6-1. The second set ended up being closer with the CSCS #2 singles player coming back to level it at one set a piece. Nic wouldn’t be outdone as he would get the ‘upset’ and win his second set against him at 6-3.
Due to the win, Nic ended up getting third place for the tournament. However, due to the win, Nic had a chance to play against the second place winner from Cheyenne Mountain (CM). It ended up being the last match of the two day tournament. CM won in straight sets 6-0, 6-1. Nic is now listed as an alternate for the state tournament held in Pueblo next weekend.
For Widefield’s number one doubles team, they too would have to beat someone they’ve already lost to for a chance at state playback. This would entail Vanguard. The two teams played a week ago with Vanguard coming out on top in straight sets. Lucas & Christion came out on fire as they won the first set 6-1. Unfortunately, the guys started to get tight with their shots and ended up hitting too often to the net player who often put the ball away for a winner. Lucas & Christion saw their tennis season come to a close with the loss at 6-1, 3-6, 3-6.
